Relational Trauma
Enlightened Gaslighting: How Spiritual Bypassing and 'Karma Shaming' Silence Real Harm
When wellness dogma turns cruel: analyzing how phrases like 'You attracted this trauma' and 'Choose love over anger' are used to evade relational accountability.
Imagine you confide in a partner or spiritual mentor that you were emotionally neglected, cheated on, or subjected to chronic manipulation. Instead of receiving empathy, protection, or accountability, they calmly look at you and say: 'There are no victims in the universe. You co-created this reality because your vibration attracted it. What is your soul trying to learn from this teacher?'
This is Enlightened Gaslighting. It is the insidious practice of taking legitimate philosophical or metaphysical concepts-such as karma, radical responsibility, the law of attraction, and unity consciousness-and weaponizing them to silence victims, excuse predatory behavior, and shut down healthy boundaries.
The Clinical Definition: Coined by psychologist John Welwood in 1984, 'spiritual bypassing' is the tendency to use spiritual ideas and practices to sidestep or avoid facing unresolved emotional issues, psychological wounds, and interpersonal accountability. When bypassed ideas are directed outward to control another person's reality, it transforms into psychological abuse.
1. The 4 Most Dangerous Forms of Spiritual Gaslighting
- 1. Vibrational Victim Blaming: Insisting that victims of assault, poverty, grief, or chronic illness 'manifested' their agony through negative thoughts or past-life karma.
- 2. The Demonization of Anger: Labeling legitimate protective rage or indignation as an 'ego attachment' or 'low frequency'. In reality, anger is the immune system of the psyche.
- 3. Forced Premature Forgiveness: Demanding that you forgive an unrepentant abuser immediately in order to 'release toxic energy', preventing proper boundary enforcement.
- 4. Cosmic Relativism ('It's All an Illusion'): Dismissing broken agreements, infidelity, or financial exploitation with dismissive phrases like 'Separation is just Maya; in the quantum field, nothing truly happened.'
2. The Somatic Toll of Denying Your Truth
When you are told your legitimate pain is merely an 'unconscious frequency', your nervous system suffers profound somatic disassociation. Your gut feelings (mediated by the vagus nerve) say 'Danger! Injustice!', while your intellectual mind repeats 'Breathe, choose love, transcend.' This internal war causes chronic jaw clenching, digestive flare-ups, and debilitating self-doubt.
