Polyvagal Nervous System Test: Measure Fight, Flight, Freeze & Vagal Tone
Assess your autonomic nervous system state using Dr. Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory. Discover whether you are in Ventral Safety, Sympathetic Alarm, or Dorsal Shutdown.
Have you ever experienced moments where, despite knowing you are in physical safety, your chest tightens, your breathing turns shallow, and your mind races through catastrophic worst-case scenarios? Or conversely, times when you feel so emotionally numb, fatigued, and checked out that even answering a simple text message feels like lifting a boulder?
These are not character flaws or mental weaknesses. They are biological shifts orchestrated by your 10th cranial nerve-the Vagus Nerve. According to Dr. Stephen Porges' groundbreaking Polyvagal Theory, our autonomic nervous system operates not as a simple on/off switch, but through a hierarchical three-tiered ladder.
**Map Your Autonomic Hierarchy**: Discover your dominant nervous system branch and receive real-time somatic drills: [Take the Free Polyvagal State Meter](/quiz/nervous-system).
The 3 Autonomic States of Polyvagal Theory
1. **Ventral Vagal (Social Engagement & Safety)**: The most evolutionarily recent branch. Heart rate variability is high, digestion is active, facial muscles are relaxed, and you feel grounded, curious, and connected. 2. **Sympathetic (Mobilization & Fight-or-Flight)**: Activated when your neuroception senses challenge or danger. Adrenaline surges, pupils dilate, breathing quickens, and you experience anxiety, anger, or frantic multitasking. 3. **Dorsal Vagal (Immobilization & Freeze)**: The primitive reptilian defense. When stress becomes overwhelming, your system initiates an emergency shutdown: severe lethargy, brain fog, dissociation, shame, and feeling 'invisible'.
Immediate Somatic Vagal Regulation Drills
Because the vagus nerve is 80% afferent (sending sensory data upward from the viscera to the brain), you cannot 'think' your way out of dysregulation. You must use bodily somatic levers: - **If In Sympathetic Alarm**: Practice extended-exhalation breathwork (such as the [Stanford Physiological Sigh](/tools/breathwork)) or bilateral sensory tapping to signal safety to the brainstem. - **If In Dorsal Freeze**: Avoid high-intensity meditation which can worsen dissociation. Instead, activate gentle vestibular movement: rock side to side, splash cold water on your cheeks, or do our [5-4-3-2-1 Sensory Grounding Lab](/tools/grounding).
