Trauma & Moral Injury
Spiritual Bypassing: How New Age Platitudes Are Used to Gaslight Real Trauma
When someone tells you that your cancer, trauma, or poverty was 'attracted by your low vibration', that isn't enlightenment-it's spiritual abuse. Understand spiritual bypassing.
You survived physical abuse, suffered a catastrophic accident, or watched a child struggle with a debilitating chronic disease. When you share your heartbreak in wellness circles, yoga studios, or progressive communities, someone smiles serenely and says: 'You know, on a soul level, your spirit chose this contract before incarnating to clear ancestral karma.' Or perhaps: 'If you just shift your vibration out of victim mentality and manifest abundance, the universe will heal you.'
Behind the incense and tranquil vocabulary lies one of the most insidious forms of psychological gaslighting: Spiritual Bypassing. Coined in 1984 by psychologist and Buddhist teacher John Welwood, spiritual bypassing is the use of spiritual practices, beliefs, and philosophies to evade confronting unresolved emotional wounds, interpersonal boundaries, and systemic injustice.
The Clinical Trap: Spiritual bypassing uses concepts that sound profound-detachment, non-judgment, unconditional love, manifestation-to invalidate legitimate anger, grief, and trauma. It is emotional avoidance masquerading as enlightenment.
1. The Dangerous Hallmarks of Spiritual Gaslighting
- Victim-Blaming Disguised as 'Manifestation': The grotesque belief that people attract war, illness, poverty, or assault through 'negative thoughts' or 'low frequency vibrations'.
- Anger Phobia: Treating righteous indignation and healthy boundary rage as 'un-evolved' or 'ego-driven', forcing victims into premature forgiveness.
- Compassionate Detachment as Covert Neglect: Using meditation and retreat retreats to abandon relational accountability, marital responsibilities, or financial obligations.
2. The Path to Grounded, Embodied Healing
Genuine spiritual maturity does not bypass the muck of being human. True healing requires touching the wound directly: feeling the raw grief of loss, screaming at betrayal, and establishing non-negotiable boundaries. Reclaim your sacred right to human messiness by speaking without spiritual censorship into an encrypted audio journal like Nuju.
